Powerless

Last night Dallas got hit with a monster storm - winds, rain, storm, and a power outage. The first few hours were fine, but then I wanted coffee. CNN, and to check my Facebook page - not happening. Such a strange feeling to not fill up my day with all of the things I normally do, and after I drove to Starbucks to get my caffeine fix, I decided to have an attitude adjustment and take advantage of this rare, quiet time.

When a client asked me to redesign a restaurant in Tucson, AZ I jumped at the chance. The name of the restaurant was Teresa's Mosaic Cafe, so I thought how easy - just find some fun tiles and do some mosaic tables and murals. Perfectionist and Lifestylist that I am, I couldn't find what I wanted, so I decided to buy a slab roller and kiln and make what ended up being over 26,000 tiles myself.

I love how it turned out, but it was a loooong time before I wanted to touch my kiln again. Fortunately, I had some tiles left over so when I bought The Home Idea Factory I decided to incorporate some of them into my new kitchen, and had the grandkids make some as well.

Today seemed like the perfect day to pick up on what I had started and after the storms yesterday, the weather was beautiful. The silence and blue skies outside the window made it easy to get inspired and almost complete this mosaic quilt that I had started over 10 years ago. I love how the bright, happy colors are as relevant today as they were when I did the restaurant, and now it will hold another special memory of a day without electric power, but a reminder that the best power comes from within.
