Choco Candy Bar Cake

This recipe has always been one of my favorites. My mother would bring it to church socials and neighborhood potlucks and be always devoured. I've kept her handwritten recipe in my files and it's a great nostalgia trip every time I bake it. It is very rich and full of chocolate, but the buttermilk really helps balance out the sweetness of the chocolate.

One of my favorites is from the Cattle Baron's Ball I attended in 1985 when it was at the Southfork Ranch. It has lots of recipes in it that are my "go-to's" including this one that I have revised a little over the years. So easy to make and delicious!

The "Texas Food Woman" and voice of True Texas Cuisine Dotty Griffith was kind enough to share this with us. What a perfect Texas Twist on a Southern favorite, and it's true - everything is better with bacon!

Dotty shared this with us:

On the theory that everything goes better with bacon, why not add some to a pie crust?

The inspiration for this recipe came from Sarah Snow, the pastry chef at The Grape. She shared her grandmother’s recipe for pie crust using bacon drippings. That made me want to add some crumbled bacon to her recipe. My version is filled with sweet potato. Garnish this bacon-y beauty with—what else? -- whipped cream.

One of our favorite seasonal finds are Kraft Pumpkin Spice Marshmallows. You can usually only find these in stores during the Fall season, but if you can't find them to use in this recipe you can substitute regular marshmallows and 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice mix. These are a favorite with kids and adults alike, and the kids can decorate them any way that they wish.

It may be cold and snowy outside but today is National Pie Day! One of our favorite things to buy at the local flea markets and garage sales is iron skillets. There are so many things you can bake with them, and with a little elbow grease and some oil you can make them better than new.
